Frustrating day for Blues
By Andrew Willis
Boys fail to secure the win.
Very frustrating day in the wind away to Rotherfield. Bobbly pitch and windy conditions not conducive to good football but the boys also started very slowly. Although playing slightly into the wind in the first half made things difficult the boys were slightly off the pace against a very competitive Rotherfield side. Both sides seemed content to play the long ball game by-passing the midfield. When on the ball the Blues players were too far apart to play the short passing game that has delivered results in recent weeks.
Second half and playing with the wind immediately made a difference with the Blues applying more pressure and with Curtis down the right and Tom down the left the boys pinned Rotherfield in their half but a packed and resolute defence made creating clear chances difficult. Finally 10 minutes in, Tom made a great run and got the ball in the area to Archie who scored a deserved goal. From that point the Blues dominated, forcing corner after corner but we failed to convert any and some good saves by the Rotherfield keeper kept the score at 1-0.
Wave after wave of attack as the Blues tried to make the game safe with a second but it wouldn’t come and of course with such a narrow lead there was always danger and the boys at the back had to defend a number of quick Rotherfield breaks. With 10 minutes to go disaster struck, ball in the area was cleared by Morgan but his clearance cannoned off a Rotherfield player and dribbled into the goal before Will could reach it.
The boys frustration threatened to boil over and prevented them from playing their best football and despite being camped in the Rotherfield area for the last 10 minutes they could not find the winner despite shaving the post several times.
Rotherfield played to their strengths and the Blues didn’t show enough inventiveness or composure to get the win.
Another great performance from MoM Neil at full back who let little past and linked really well with the midfield.
