Battling Bears Back To Winning Ways
By Simon Timperley
It was important today that the boys got a good result following two heavy away defeats. Back on home turf (our new Mortimer pitch was looking great) they didn't disappoint. A true game of two halves but positives could be taken from both.
We started strongly and put Winsdor under pressure from the start. We were first to the ball and competing strongly all over the park (something we sometimes struggle with). We kept the pressure up, passing the ball nicely, but with more end product this time as we created numerous chances. The pressure told after about 15 minutes, after some air tennis in their box, the ball fell to Dylan to rifle home. Pleasingly, we went straight back on the attack, Dylan linking up again with Roshan and slotting a second home in what seemed only a minute after the first. My only grumble of the half was when through some form of divine intervention for them, they called on Moses, who parted the Red Sea which was our midfield and defence to allow one of their players to stroll through unchallenged and pull one back. It was their only attack of the half, fortunately Dylan grabbed his hat-trick before half time which calmed me down a bit!
We only had 11 players today, which can be good in terms of keeping the team and formation the same, but on a warm day, we were never going to be able to maintain the same intensity in the 2nd half. We did start brightly but they slowly got some momentum and began to put us under pressure. They pulled one back after a shot was saved by Max with the rebound falling kindly to one of their players. For the next 10 minutes we were put under lots of pressure, but the boys dug in. Although they looked shaky initially they showed great determination and belief and defended well. As the opposition pushed up, we really should have got a goal or two on the counter-attack, but we were all happy and relieved to hold on for a deserved 3-2 win. The parents may have doubted it - I never did (honest).
Everyone played well, Max making some good second half saves, the back line worked well together, Harvey and Lucas are developing a good understanding and both full-backs, Ed and Jacob were solid today. Jake, Connor and Ben C bossed the midfield in the first half and gave everything in the 2nd and they couldn't cope with our front 3 of Roshan, Harry and Dylan early on. But it was Dylan who got MOTM for his excellent first half hat trick, really playing well this season Dylan, keep it up!
