A bright sunny morning as the Blues returned to MWE for the first time in a while. Been a long time since we’d played a Laurel Park team. Blues started well, playing some neat passing football, time and again they almost broke through but once again just couldn’t quite find that final pass or a crisp enough finish. The Laurel Park keeper made a number of good saves and the Blue kept being caught offside and it began to look like it wasn’t going to be the Blues' day despite their dominance. They made one beautiful sweeping move that ended with the ball in the net but yet again it was ruled offside, the boys began to show their frustration and the game became scrappy, it looked as if the Blues would lose their composure but on the half hour Joseph put Archie through to break the deadlock. At one point Miller made a surging run down the left, the Laurel Park keeper bravely came out and dove at his feet but was injured and had to leave the field. Just as it look like the Blues would have to settle for a 1-0 half-time lead Archie pounced on a cross from Tom to make it 2-0 at the break.
After a half-time chat about keeping composure and concentrating on playing football the Blues started to second half much better and after 5 minutes Archie played Tom in who finished at the second attempt. The Blues were now camped in the Laurel Park half and only some dogged defending and miraculous saves by their keeper stopped Burghfield adding to their total. As the Blues pushed forwards in search of another goal there were occaisional breaks by Laurel Park but the boys at the back covered eachother really well to snuff out any chances. As the half wore on Laurel Park began to tire and Josh and then (goal-a-game) Morgan made it 4-0. In the last quarter Morgan was about to pull the trigger again but was pulled back and a penalty was given. Interestingly Will picked up the ball but it seems like his recent rugby training has confused him as he launched the spot kick high over the bar for three points. As the game entered the last quarter there was a big cheer as Neil got his first of the season and then late on Morgan put Archie in to complete his second hat-trick of the season. Some nice football today and really nice to get our first clean sheet, Man of the Match Amani who despite periods of inactivity kept his focus really well.
