Today the Blues welcomed Bracknell back to MWE for the second time this season. Having already lost twice to this side already we knew this wouldn’t be an easy game and Bracknell didn’t disappoint. Missing Ben and Jay and with Morgan unsure of his fitness and with memories of a concussion last time these teams met it probably wasn’t surprising that the Blues started quietly and it was Bracknell who pushed forwards in the early exchanges. As expected Bracknell threw the ball forward and every opportunity and chased up with their strong forwards. Curtis made one brilliant save in the top right corner and Morgan also produced some good, if somewhat unorthodox goalkeeping when it was his turn.
The Blues were struggling to get the ball forward and hold it up, having to play Fergus deep hampered our ability to create in the opposition half but slowly the boys got up to speed and when Amani made a great run down the right he managed to get the ball over for Tom to come in from the left and tuck the ball home. Now the Blues were well on top, with Tom down the left and Curtis down the right we were pinning Bracknell back in their half and creating good chances but just when it looked like we’d get a second, a Bracknell player picked the ball up and managed to run through a series of weak tackles to even the score. Josh had to come off for a while when an elbow to the face caused a bloody nose and with the boys in shock for a few minutes and we were wondering if this would go the same way as the previous two meetings.
A few positional tweeks, Griff in goal, Amani covering defensive mid allowing Fergus to push on and the two teams now stood toe to toe at every challenge and this time it was the Blues who prevailed with Tom and Curtis winning the battle down the right.
Fergus made a great run down the left putting the ball over for Archie to finish and the Blues had their noses in front. Bracknell continued to pump the ball into the Blues box at every opportunity but the defence held firm. Curtis was taking a pounding down the right but this just seemed to make him more determined and his ball onto Fergus and then onto Morgan saw the game made safe.
Yet another bruising encounter in this run of tough games but the Blues did really well to grind out another win to keep the pressure on at the top.
Some great performances in unfamiliar positions today and Man of the Match went to Josh who worked so hard today in a very competitive midfield battle.
