Tom and Fergus grab a brace each.

Second v third, equal on points so this promised to be a tough game but as the sun shone and the temperature rose it became clear that Finch were suffering even more half-term and injury woes than the Blues.

Both teams had just about managed to get 11 players on the pitch but with no subs and the temperature heading towards 20C this was going to be a very different challenge to that of recent weeks.

Without our injured captain Joseph started in the defensive midfield role and the Blues were soon on top and testing the Finch keeper. After 10 minutes a great ball in by Curtis was well finished by Morgan and soon after Morgan worked his way into the box on the left and squeezed the ball across the goal for Archie to squeeze it home.
With Miller now taking the defensive midfield role the Blues continued to drive forwards, occasionally Finch broke and with midfielders less than keen to sprint back in the heat, Christian, Curtis and Tom had to make good defensive interceptions. The Blues continued to make chances but the Finch keeper made a number of good saves to keep the score at 2-0.

Half-time and a welcome break and drink.

In an effort to give people a rest to try some new options at the back Neil and Fergus covered the full-back roles as Curtis and Tom bombed down the wings. The fairly new left wing role seemed to suit Tom giving him the option to cut inside and after a quarter of an hour he sailed past several players and rifled the ball home. Ten minutes later Tom again cut in from the left and lashed the ball high into the net.

As Finch’s lack of fit players began to tell in the heat the Blues poured forwards again and again and should have extended their lead but Finch held firm until the last ten minutes when the weary defenders couldn’t cope with Fergus’ mazy dribbles in from the left and he scored two almost identical goals in the last ten minutes.

In lovely warm conditions on a great pitch the Blues played some nice football and if it hadn’t been for some excellent goalkeeping the goal tally could have been more.

With a number of players away, many had to cover unfamiliar positions today but all did so well none better than Neil who got man of the match after a great stint at full-back in the second half.
