Archie hit two

The Blues welcomed the Reds to their temporary home following the theft of a crossbar from our home ground.
As always a big crowd to watch this fixture, in fact more parents than players for Blues who were without injured Ben and Amani. Also a nasty gusting wind down the pitch which promised to make it hard to play nice football. The Blues started with the wind but early exchanges were pretty even and most of the play was in a competitively contested central area of the field. As the half wore on the Blues started to get some joy down the flanks through Joseph and Curtis and there were a couple of shots blasted over the bar. The Reds were dangerous when they broke but Christian and Miller did a good job at snuffing out any danger. It was looking like the half may end level but just before the break Jay won the ball on the edge of the area and got it through to Archie who finished coolly. Would such a slender lead be enough against the wind in the second half.
Novel positions for Joseph and Neil at full backs to allow Tom and Curtis to attack down the wings. The wind made it difficult to escape our half with goal kicks struggling to make it out of the goal-area. The Reds began to force the Blues back into the last third and in one goal area scramble they managed to force the ball home. In the scramble Will injured his arm and we were forced to make a change with Curtis taking over in goal and Jay coming back on. Although the wind made it difficult the Blues adapted well and played some lovely passing moves to gain territory. At one point Archie broke free only to be felled by Rob rushing out from his goal. Tom and Fergus played some lovely one touch football up the left and the Blues forced a couple of corners. One of which was met by a thundering header from Jay which was brilliantly tipped onto the bar by Rob. As the game moved into the last quarter the Blues started to play some really nice football, keeping the ball on the ground and moving it quickly between players. Eventually this paid off as Tom and Fergus combined well to get the ball through to Morgan in the area who unselfishly passed to Archie to finished for his second. The Reds threw the ball forwards at every opportunity but the Blues defense held firm and the Blues made it safe when Fergus played Morgan in to make it 3-1.
As always a competitive game between these two sides but played in good spirit. Considering the continuing goalkeeping and injury problems this was a great performance by the Blues with players often forced into unfamiliar positions. The Blues coped well with the difficult conditions scoring 3 good goals and playing some really attractive football at times. Too many good performances to pick a Man of the Match this week, a true team performance.
