Just when we thought summer had arrived we were once again playing in 40 mile an hour winds as Storm Hannah blew through Burghfield..
After the Easter break we were back for the final two games of the season. Another tough game against Rotherfield in prospect but spirits were high as we welcomed back our captain Ben for the first time in about 2.5 months.
The Blues played the first half against the wind and had to work very hard to work the ball into the opposition half. Despite the wind the Blues were playing some lovely football and controlling most of the possession though Rotherfield always posed a danger especially when their cultured No 9 was on the ball. Half-way through the Blues worked a good position and a great volley from the edge of the area by Morgan was well saved by the keeper. Curtis was having a great game and it was his ball in to Fergus who finished with a neat volley to break the deadlock on the half-hour. For the rest of the half the only danger came from our own making as we gave away freekicks in dangerous areas.
Second half and all change as we gained the advantage of the wind and for most of the half it was one way traffic. Having said that if took another 20 minutes of pressure before the Blues extended their lead when Miller put Archie in to make it 2-0. A few minutes later the game was made safe when Morgan broke down the left and put in a delightful cross for Archie to head home.
Rotherfield didn’t give up and made a good break to make it 3-1 before Josh danced his way through their defence to score a great solo goal. The final goal came from one of Will’s monster goal kicks that ran all the way through and bounced over Rotherfield’s keeper.
Despite the wind the Blues played some lovely football at times and would have scored more with a bit more clinical finishing.
Man of the Match this week was Curtis who had a great game in defence and attack.
